The once-popular Nitro TV IPTV service has been ordered to pay over $100 million in piracy damages.
Back in August 2021, the operators of Nitro TV were sued by DISH Network for violation of the Federal Communications Act and other breaches.
The alleged operators behind Nitro TV included four individuals who obtained unlicensed content from DISH satellite broadcasts and Sling’s programming.
Court documents revealed that Nitro TV sold over 100,000 subscriptions that included thousands of unlicensed live channels and VOD content.

Court documents revealed that Nitro TV sold over 100,000 subscriptions that included thousands of unlicensed live channels and VOD content.
Two bank accounts of the pirate IPTV operators received at least $5.5 million in revenue from these Nitro TV subscriptions.
Fast forward to February 2022 and the group of DISH, Sling, and NagraStar filed a motion that demanded over $100 million in damages for copyright and FCA violations.
DISH and NagraStar were eventually awarded $100,363,000 by a District Judge for statutory damages against the defendants (Nitro TV).
In the official Court judgment, the plaintiffs (DISH and NagraStar) appear to have received further orders in addition to the money.
The document states the following:
“It is further ordered that the defendants are permanently enjoined from (1) receiving or assisting others in receiving DISH’s satellite communications without authorization from DISH; (2) selling or distributing any device or equipment that is intended for receiving or assisting others in receiving DISH’s satellite communications of television programming; (3) circumventing a DRM or any other technological protection measure that controls access to Sling’s programming, including through the use of Sling subscription accounts to provide Sling programming for the Nitro TV service.”
Overall, it will be interesting to see how this ultimately plays out with the Nitro TV operators and if more IPTV lawsuits from DISH are on the way.
