Below, you will find my in-depth unbiased review that covers both the good and bad.
I will also explain the differences between the KM2 Plus and original KM2.

There aren’t a lot of feature upgrades but MECOOL is addressing a big one that gets a lot of criticism which is additional internal storage.
The new KM2 Plus comes with 16GB of internal storage with 13GB left once all system apps and OS have been accounted for.  This should be enough storage for most people to house their favorite applications.
Another big addition is the inclusion of the AV1 Codec.  Soon, this will be the standard streaming format for most services and applications so this will help “future-proof” this streaming device.
The new device comes with Bluetooth 5.0 and the original was equipped with 4.2.  Not a big one in my book but if you’re someone who connects peripheral devices this way, it might be to you.
One main reason their original device was so popular was because it was Netflix certified.  This means that you can stream with Netflix in full HD on the device.  This one touts the same capability and supports other popular services such as Amazon Prime Video.

Lastly, the new system is running Android TV 11.  If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you know my thoughts on these incremental Android updates.  To me, not too important because rarely we see new Android TV features that would prompt a new purchase.  Android updates make a bigger difference when we’re talking about phones and tablets.

MECOOL KM2 Plus Review

Streaming devices that come with Android TV are a breeze to setup.  Nothing different for this device on that front.

It’s important to point out that this is running Android TV and not stock Android which is found on phones, tablets, and generic Android boxes.
Android TV is optimized for the television experience and remote control.

One of the first features that I tested when starting this MECOOL KM2 Plus Review was using Netflix.
I’m happy to see that the Netflix app isn’t a hacked version that tries to get around the certifications.  It’s the real deal and it plays in full HD the way that it should!
I also tested YouTube and Prime Video and both played in full HD as well.

I installed the KODIFIREIPTVRapid App Installer and side-loaded the popular free streaming apps.  I also installed TiviMate as this is what I use for my primary IPTV player.

All of the sideloaded applications worked as expected and so did my IPTV service.
I used the MECOOL KM2 Plus as my main streaming device in my office for four days and had absolutely no problems.

Remote Control

I really like the remote control that comes with this Android TV Box.
It connects via Bluetooth and I don’t feel any lag whatsoever.
Also, at startup you have the ability to pair it with your television so you can control TV power, volume, and input.

Expandable Internal Storage

The MECOOL KM2 Plus does come with 16GB of internal storage which should be enough to house all of your favorite apps and games.  But, if you need additional space for more apps, the KM2 Plus does support expanding internal storage.
I first enabled Developer Options by going into Settings / Device Preferences / About / clicked the Build menu item 7 or 8 times.  I then went back to one screen and into Developer options where I enabled “Force allow apps on external”.

I then inserted a 256GB SandDisk 3.0 USB Drive into the unit and formatted it as internal storage.

We can achieve this same feature with the Fire TV Stick 4K but the process is less than ideal.

3rd Party Launchers

Does the MECOOL KM2 Plus support 3rd party launchers?
This is a question we see quite frequently for the devices that we review because people are sick of the ad-riddled launchers.
I tested Wolf Launcher with Launcher Manager app and it worked perfectly!

This is great to see because we can get rid of the overbearing Android TV user interface and replace it with a customizable 3rd party launcher such as Wolf.

MECOOL KM2 Plus – Download Speeds

I used the Analiti Speed test app for the following tests.
I have one GB Fiber download speed plan through my Internet Service Provider.
During the WiFi tests, I am connected to the 5Ghz band on my Asus AC3100 Router.  This router resides in the same room as my MECOOL KM2 Plus (approximately 20 feet away from the wireless router).
I’m using Quad VPN as my VPN on Chicago Server 02 (chi-a04).

Ethernet
VPN On: Download = 85 Mbps & Upload = 84 Mbps
VPN Off: Download = 94 Mbps & Upload = 87 Mbps
WiFi
VPN On: Download = 93 Mbps & Upload = 45 Mbps
VPN Off: Download = 369 Mbps & Upload = 386 Mbps
Note:  The reason for faster WiFi speeds is because the Ethernet port is only capable of 100 Mbps.
The KM2 Plus provides screaming fast WiFi speeds for both downloading and uploading.  Keep in mind, you only need 20-30 Mbps to stream 4K video and anything higher is overkill and won’t provide any benefit.

MECOOL KM2 Plus Final Thoughts

As I mentioned earlier in this MECOOL KM2 Plus Review, one of MECOOL’s most popular model was the original KM2.
It’s nice to see that they built off the popularity of that device by adding additional storage, AV1 support, and Android TV 11.
NETFLIX has always been a big pain point for cord cutters when using generic Android TV Boxes because most don’t support it.  The MECOOL KM2 Plus keeps support for NETFLIX while also slightly improving the device.
Yes, they could have made a bigger impact by adding an additional 16GB of internal storage, additional 2 GB of RAM, and possibly Gigabit Ethernet to future-proof the system.
It’s still a great streaming device, especially for those looking to break lose from the Amazon Fire TV ecosystem which seems to be slowly closing customization options each day.
