Roku is Ending All Private Channels in 2022
It was recently announced that Roku is ending private channels in 2022.Private channels are non-certified channels that function on Roku’s hardware but aren’t officially supported in the Roku Channel Store.These non-certified (private) Roku channels were once popular among Roku users wanting to access content that couldn’t be found in Roku’s official Channel Store.These private channels were not reviewed by Roku’s team for technical requirements or compliance and often appealed to niche audiences.
Roku Ending Private Channels – What Happened?
According to an official press release from Roku, the company states the following regarding private channels.“With the release of the IDK and beta channels, Roku will remove non-certified channels from the platform .”Back in October of 2021, Roku announced the launch of an Independent Developer Kit (IDK), which will “enable developers to explore the platform’s capabilities and personalize their Roku experience.”With the launch of their new IDK, Roku then decided to terminate non-certified (private) channels from their platform entirely.

Roku then followed up with another press release in November 2021 explaining their plan for removing private channels on February 23, 2022.“Roku is sunsetting non-certified channels. Specifically, on February 23rd, 2022, all non-certified channels will be disabled across all Roku devices. Roku is sunsetting non-certified channels to better align with industry standards on their developer QA testing of channels, and limiting distribution of channels to a small set of users.With Roku private channels completely going away in a few days, this leaves many users frustrated and looking for alternative options.We want to know your thoughts on Roku’s decision to end private channels.
