  1. Jesus…look at the f'ing comments here.
This was a piece of shit movie…
Just another Left Wing sack of shit "PC" movie. This time trying to portray the American Western as a bunch of limp-wristed pedophiles running around on a ranch sucking each other off.
Reason # 694 why the Oscars are garbage and why there will be backlash on Liberals in Nov '22.

  2. Sam Elliott is slamming this movie as another "gay" movie. We are in 2022, people. I grew up on a farm in the 1960's. I am as much a man as Sam Elliott, but I happen to be gay. When can we look past the stereotypes and realize that a man is a man, not matter his sexuality. I have kicked the asses of many 'straight' men because I had to. It was a necessity. I want to be recognized as a man…period.

  3. This movie come across like a fake coming of age movie, using the expansion to the west as an scenario to a very contrive story of femenine archetipes, not even homosexuality per se: for once because at those times there was no differentiation between gay and straight, you either were queer or not – read rubyfruit jungle – and in the other side, sex between men happened all the time it was just under the rug as it is implied in "the will be blood" or more clearly in "Brokenback mountain".

  4. There's historical fiction, and there's historical bastardization. Which one is this?
A small group can try to use production value to create a fictional framing of history that fits their present narrative, yet people have a sense of Truth.
To begin with – there's no need to wear chaps all of the time, in fact not at all when herding a bunch of docile herefords with udders dragging on the ground. Chaps are heavy, stinky, clothes are stained. Cowboys were never pretty like the costumeboys of today.

Secondly, people were religious back then, in a simple way. They believed in God and the rules of the Bible, even if they were not obedient – they were not interested in existential crisis. They had to focus on surviving and how to live so as to avoid actual crisis.

For people born of the 1800s, need was the driver of life. Cowboys weren't driven by 'identity' or acting like a cowboy or macho or whatever. Ranch work involved no luxury, it was rough work involving exposure to the elements and occasional serious dangers. A man needed to be prepared for natural calamity, accident, drunken & criminal conflict. There was not much pretense. A man could go as far as his strength and luck took him.
The entire premise of this film is that the 'toxic masculinity' was a projection relating to identity issues. This is a cute theory, yet relates not at all to the truth. In a world where death could be dealt arbitrarily, one's focus was on survival – which meant actually being tough and capable. There was little time to think of anything else.

No one would be as incapable as the character Peter in those times. Women and children would be able to handle horses, guns, hunting, life stock, and nearly all elements of life. Every grown man would have a basic proficiency in all areas. The drama presented could legitimately be played out in many 20th century urban settings. Why they chose to dress it us on a dude ranch is the real question.
