It was recently reported that monthly rates for DirecTV customers have increased since AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner back in 2018.
According to the New York Post, “Monthly rates for customers of DirecTV have surged by more than 20 percent during the past year-and-a-half.”

AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner gave the notion to many that monthly rates for cable would decrease due to less competition in the industry. But clearly that has not been the case.
Prices may spike even more in the future, as AT&T will continue to raise the price of their DirecTV packages in 2020, according to another report from the TVAnswerman.
The report states that “DirecTV starting next month (Jan 2020) will raise prices on most programming packages for existing customers by $1 a month to $8 a month.”
As a rebuttal, AT&T blames the rising cost of program acquisition behind the monthly cable price increases. Their notice to current customers states the following:
“Because our programming costs went up, we have to raise our monthly prices for select packages starting January 19, 2020. You’ll see the new pricing on your bill.”
We wouldn’t be surprised if this trend of rising prices continues, as more and more cable companies continue to recover from loses due to cord-cutting.
