This step-by-step tutorial will show you how to speed up Firestick by assigning the Cloudflare DNS server addresses to your Internet connection.
What’s a DNS server you may ask?

You can think of a DNS server as a phone book for the Internet.
When people type domain names into the URL bar in their Internet browser (troypoint.com), DNS servers are responsible for translating those strings of text into numeric IP addresses, leading them to the correct website.  Each Website has a unique numeric value assigned to it, which is the IP address, and the Website address points to it.
What's A DNS Server?
Some DNS servers perform faster than others so that’s why this adjustment may help increase your speed.
Please note that some of you may not notice any difference whatsoever and in that case, it is OK using the default DNS server that your ISP is providing.
If you are an avid cord-cutter, you know that one of the most important components to quality streaming is a fast internet connection. A slow network connection usually contributes to buffering and lag when trying to watch movies, tv shows, and more.
This is one of the most frustrating parts of cutting the cord, and is one of the main complaints we receive here at TROYPOINT.
This is a completely safe and efficient way to improve your speed and get the most out of your streaming device.
In the instance below, I am using a Fire TV Stick 4K which is the most popular streaming device available today.
Prior to initializing the “DNS hack”, I checked my internet speed via my home network using the KODIFIREIPTVSpeed Test within the KODIFIREIPTVApp and here are my results.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I strongly suggest testing your Internet Speed before initializing Cloudfare DNS on your device or router.  As noted above, this adjustment won’t increase speed for everyone, only those of you with slow DNS servers.
After using the first instructional guide below I tested again and got the following results:

As you can see, in this instance my Download Speed nearly doubled by using the first guide below.
There are two ways that you can change your DNS settings.
You can change the DNS settings on the actual Firestick/Fire TV or you can alter them in your router’s configuration, and by doing so, all devices on your network will be optimized.
If your router is capable, I suggest using the second option due to the fact it may help all of your Internet-connected devices.

Option #2 – Alter DNS Settings On Router

This should be the preferred option if your router allows it.
If you change the DNS settings directly on your router, all Internet connected devices that connect to it may realize the same speed increase.
If you use a router that your Internet Service Provider has issued you, these settings may not be available in your admin interface.
In my case, I’m using an Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Router and I can easily change the DNS settings in that which I will show you below.  The screens that come with your router may differ depending on the model.
Click images below to enlarge them for better visibility.
1 Launch your router admin panel.  Refer to your router instructions on how to do this for your specific model.  In my case, I will type the following IP address into my Internet browser – 192.168.1.1
Open Internet Browser
2  Log into your router admin panel with the username and password that you set when you first configured it.
Log into your router
3  Click WAN setting.
Click WAN
4 Type in new Cloudflare DNS Server Addresses (1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1) and click Apply or Save button at the bottom.
Type in DNS Server Addresses
If this change doesn’t help you, simply return to the default settings and click the Apply button at the bottom of the screen.

While you may lose some download speed after connecting to your VPN, in our case it was still faster than the initial connection to our home Network.
Many cord-cutters use an IPTV Service for live streaming and this was also tested after setting up the new connection. You may find that this trick will eliminate buffering on your IPTV Service for good.
This is due to the fact that many IPTV Providers use Cloudflare as their content delivery network (CDN).  This means less distance to travel for the DNS lookup.
If you find that connecting to Cloudlfare does not increase your device’s speed, we can remove this to return to your original network.
Follow guide below to disable.

How To Disable Cloudflare Connection on Firestick

To return to your device’s original network settings, follow steps below:
1. Open Settings and click Network
click network
2. Hover over your connected Network and click 3 Horizontal lines on remote to Forget Network
forget network
3. Click Select to Confirm
click select to confirm
4. Scroll down and Click See All Networks

5. Find and choose your Network

You are now disconnected from Cloudflare and can reconnect to your preferred Network choice.
